Fort Smith Housing Authority plan gets pushback

The Fort Smith Housing Authority (FSHA) faced a small but hostile audience Monday night (Aug. 20) at the Bluff Avenue Baptist Church.

The controversy: FSHA wishes to add 36 units of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-approved housing at the corner of South S and South 16th Streets.

Sidewalk Reconstruction in Fort Smith

Motorists in the vicinity of North A and B Streets will notice significant construction activity between North 2nd and North 13th Streets this summer. The work is a result of the City’s annual sidewalk program. Funds for sidewalk repair and construction come from building construction permits issued in the City of Fort Smith.

Arkansas River Valley Blanketed With State’s Only 4G LTE Network From Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless customers in communities along Interstate 40 from Little Rock to Fort Smith now have seamless coverage of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network.

The speed of Verizon’s 4G LTE network allows customers who live in the Arkansas River Valley, or who are traveling along Interstate 40, to easily stream video and music, share photos, download files and surf the Internet without buffering, using connectivity speeds up to 10 times faster than other networks.

The Park at West End in Fort Smith is now open for the summer season.

You can ride the carousel or Ferris Wheel for on $1 a ride, or buy a $20 card and receive four rides free. The park is located at 15 N. 2nd Street, just off the Garrison Avenue Bridge.

Tuesday-Friday, 4 to 10 p.m.
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Besides serving as a platform for featuring local artists and traveling exhibits, a large part of the new Fort Smith Regional Art Museum’s mission is to serve the community, says Lee Ortega, RAM executive director.

Ortega gave a lecture, “Art for Art’s Sake,” Wednesday at the Echols Building on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith campus. Admission was $10.

Board of Directors Approves Lab Equipment for Water Safety

Earlier this week, the Fort Smith Board of Directors approved the purchase of a piece of equipment for the Laboratory Services Division of the Utilities Department that will ensure safe, high quality drinking water for citizens on the City of Fort Smith water utility system.

In the 10 months since Mayor Sandy Sanders and the City of Fort Smith’s board of directors met and agreed on top strategic priorities, progress has been achieved on each item. Additional strides have been made toward tactical issues identified during the May 23, 2011 board retreat, including the launch of a monthly electronic newsletter, standing up social media presences on Facebook and Twitter, as well as launching a series of quarterly neighborhood meetings in each of the city’s four wards.
