Free Storm Spotter Class To Be Held In Fort Smith Tonight

The Sebastian County Department of Emergency Management and Public Safety is teaming up with the National Weather Service Office in Tulsa to offer a free weather spotter class tonight from 7 pm to 9 pm, according to a news release sent out today.

The class will take place at the county’s Emergency Management and Public Safety Facility, located at 8400 South Zero St., in Fort Smith.

No preregistration is required to attend the class.

UAFS Selected To First NCAA Tournament

When the season began, Josh Newman set the goal of reaching the NCAA tournament for his UAFS Lions.

Sunday night that goal was accomplished.

UAFS (21-6) was selected as an at-large bid in the South Central Region, the first ever bid in school history.

The Lions, the No. 6 seed, will face Midwestern State Saturday in the opening round in Denver, Colo. Metro State is the region’s top seed and will host the tournament.

Northside Seniors Look To Cap Careers In Style

A senior class that has won 80 games in a three year span would normally be the best in school history.

Northside just isn’t your normal girls basketball program.

The Lady Bears are 80-9 over the past three seasons and their seniors are two wins away from capping their careers in style.

Construction on Fort Smith Aquatics Park Begins

A new regional aquatics park will soon be under construction in Fort Smith.

Sebastian County and Fort Smith leaders will break ground on the project 5:30 p.m. Friday (March 7) at Ben Geren Park.

The nearly $11 million water park will feature a wave pool, lazy river, and four water slides. The city and county will split the bill for the new facility.

Voters approved the initial proposal in 2012, which at the time held a price tag of eight million dollars. The cost of the project, however, went up to include more features the community wanted at the park.

Sebastian County Inmate Spends Night In Courts Building By Mistake

A Sebastian County inmate was left in a court building holding cell overnight last month instead of being returned right away to the jail, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

A court bailiff found the inmate in a secure cell the next morning at the Sebastian County Courts Building, the release states.

The inmate, whose name was not immediately released, is in jail on felony drug charges and a charge of endangerment of a minor, according to the release.
