Racing legend Mario Andretti spent Thursday morning in the River Valley.  He was part of Jim Grizzle Tire’s 50th Anniversary celebration in Fort Smith.

Sebastian County to Decide on Penny Tax

Early voting starts Tuesday (May 7) as voters in Sebastian County decide whether to continue a one cent sales tax which was first approved in 1994. Voters renewed the tax again in 2004.

The tax benefits all of Sebastian County, including the city of Fort Smith. The money is distributed within the county and its eleven cities based on their share of the county’s population.

Midland Bridge Lane Closures Sunday, May 5

Portions of the Midland Boulevard bridge over Arkansas River between Van Buren and Fort Smith will be closed for several hours Sunday (May 5) as crews do a routine inspection.

The work will require alternating lane closures between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department.

Traffic will be controlled using warning signs and cones.

The Fort Smith Public Library will present Food for Thought: Coach John McDonnell – Book Talk and Film on Friday, May 17, at Noon.  Join retired University of Arkansas Coach John McDonnell to celebrate the release of the book John McDonnell: The Most Successful Coach in NCAA History by Andrew Maloney and John McDonnell.  Emmy award-winning filmmaker Larry Foley will also show his short documentary on McDonnell and moderate a discussion followed by a book signing.  Bring your lunch if you wish or pick something up at Dewey’s Café; the Library

Ft. Smith Fire Marshal Retires after 40 Years

A Fort Smith fire marshal retired Tuesday after 40 years of service to the city.

Friends and co-workers gathered at Fire Station #1 shortly before to wish Fire Marshal Chris Driggers well as he heads on to retirement.

Chief Driggers began his career with the Fort Smith Fire Department in 1973, working his way up through the ranks from probationary fireman, to driver, to captain then on to battalion chief and fire marshal.

He says now he will be doing whatever his wife tells him to do.
