Sparks Provides Free Prostate Cancer Screenings
Health

Sparks Health System is empowering men to take charge of their health by eliminating the cost to patients for a valuable cancer screening.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer for American men, other than skin cancer, and it’s the second deadliest cancer for men across the country.  The organization reports that about one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease in his lifetime.

The Sparks Radiation Treatment Center is offering patients in our area screening tests to detect prostate cancer in its early stages. The tests are now provided free of charge to all interested patients, with no eligibility requirements, on Wednesdays, beginning April 17, from 2 – 4:30 p.m.  Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins will be accepted.

“Prostate cancer screenings save lives.  The screenings allow us to prevent many cases of widespread cancer and the suffering that comes with it,” said Bruce Cross, M.D., board certified Radiation Oncologist.  “This benefit will increase as the population grows older and remains healthier into its 70s and 80s.”

The free screening includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and meeting with Dr. Cross.  A physical examination will also be provided at the patient’s request.

“In the 25 years since I graduated from the Cleveland Clinic in Radiation Oncology, I have seen the impact of PSA testing in my practice with fewer and fewer cases of advanced and incurable cancers,” said Dr. Cross.

Testing is recommended for all men age 45 and older.  Younger men are encouraged to be screened if there is a family history of prostate cancer.

Patients will be notified of their test results by Dr. Cross or a nurse within seven days.  In the event there are concerns, appropriate referrals or suggestions for action will be made.  A hard copy of the results will also be mailed to patients.

For more information about the free prostate screenings, or to make an appointment, contact the Sparks Radiation Treatment Center at (479)709-7190.  The clinic is located in the Sparks Medical Plaza, 1502 Dodson Ave., Fort Smith.  For more information about Sparks Health System, visit www.SparksHealth.com.
