FREE Sensory Saturday Event Offers Disability Community a Safe and Comfortable Environment

Carmike Cinema, the Parent Training & Information Center and Bost have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment with the “Sensory Saturday” program.  In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie theater will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down.

Masons of Arkansas invite the public to join in their 175th anniversary celebration Saturday, April 13, at the Clayton House. The free event will feature a cookout, an 1880s carnival, and a vignette about four famous area Masons including W. H. H. Clayton, who served as  federal prosecuting attorney of Judge Parker’s court.

Spring Back Movie Day: Hotel Transylvania

Valentine’s Day Stortyime

King remembrance begins on Garrison Avenue

With the threat of rain and cold temperatures, few citizens came out to watch the Martin Luther King Parade on Saturday (Jan. 12). The 15th annual parade began at 2 p.m. and is the kick-off of community events that will include awarding scholarships to area college students.

The rain had stopped shortly before the parade began and the rain stayed away long enough for the parade participants to finish their march down Garrison Avenue in downtown Fort Smith.

Greenwood Trail of Lights and Living Nativity

Bell Park in Greenwood will be illuminated with 79 Christmas and holiday displays Dec 19-Dec 22.

The event runs from 6-9 p.m. each night. A living nativity will also be on display.

The event is sponsored by the Greenwood Civic Organization and donations from citizens and local businesses.

A $3 donation is being collected. The money will go toward needy children and families in the area, according to project chairman, Joel Goldstein.

Free Home Visit Service for Seniors Expanding

            At the time of year that seniors are most vulnerable emotionally, a free service to assist them is growing. The Home Visit Program is an initiative by senior care professionals at Emeritus at Willow Brook in Fort Smith that’s designed to check on the wellbeing of older people throughout the region. The program is being expanded at this time because the approaching holidays bring a greater risk of depression among seniors.
