Results of 'Click It or Ticket' in Fort Smith

May 20th through June 2nd, Fort Smith Police participated in a Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization cracking down on motorists who were not belted.

 

  During this mobilization, FSPD issued 240 tickets for No Seatbelt, 9 tickets for No Child Restraint, and 51 tickets for Speeding.  There were 18 arrests for DWI, 50 for Driving While License Suspended, 109 for No Insurance, and 4 for Reckless Driving during the campaign.

10th anniversary nears for Arkansas Tech-Ozark

On July 1, Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus will reach a special milestone in the educational institution’s history, its 10th anniversary of joining the Arkansas Tech University system.

 

A formal celebration is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Arkansas Tech-Ozark, and the campus asks that members of the River Valley communities mark their calendars and plan to join the festivities.

 

UAFS Works Towards Master’s Degree in Healthcare

The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith is moving forward with their plan to offer master’s degrees.

At their last meeting, the Board of Trustees for the University of Arkansas System approved UAFS leaders to present the plan before the Arkansas Department of Higher Education on July 26.

Based on community research, the university hopes to first seek a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration, according to school officials.

Food for Thought Series: Snakes of Arkansas

The Fort Smith Public Library will present Food for Thought: Snakes of Arkansas on Friday, June 21, at Noon.  Local reptile enthusiasts Jeremy Sloan and Brad Birchfield with the Arkansas Herpetological Society will present a common sense-based presentation about snakes and their importance to our environment.  You'll learn how to identify Arkansas's most common snakes, how to avoid them, and come away with a better appreciation for our native serpents. Several live snakes will be available for viewing at the presentation.

End of Drought Brings Booming Business for Farmers, Suppliers

As hot as it has been lately, it might surprise you to know that the drought in this area is over.

“You know, at the first of this year when we started getting rain, producers were cautiously optimistic because at the first of last year, we looked good also,” said Johnny Gunsaulis, county extension agent.

Now with summer almost officially here, Gunsaulis says the growth has at least doubled this year.

Outreach Group Offers Fresh Produce To Local Families

An estimated 51,000 people in the River Valley – including more than 23,000 children – don’t know where they’ll find their next meal, according to new research by Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization.

The study shows both Sebastian and Crawford counties say an increase in the number of residents who are food insecure.
